Many systems are, of course, customizable by developers but few meet the customer’s need to be configurable through a purpose-built UI for non-technical staff— allowing for system updates to be performed with zero downtime.

First-generation PSIMs were designed to address unique physical security problems and were highly customized to the locations where they were deployed. They were intended for specific environments, such as a major seaport—where they fulfilled very particular needs and requirements seldom common in other organizations. Inevitably, the rigidity at the heart of these original systems became an obstacle when new requirements emerged.

What’s changed? Today many organizations need a more flexible platform that allows them to configure their system to accommodate an expanded security mandate. Teams need the ability to easily add an action to an evolving event, modify the procedure for a change in monitoring hours, update a security call list with a new user, or even add a new type of alarm to the system. As some of these actions are time-critical, having a system that can help an operator to follow appropriate processes and yet make necessary changes quickly and easily, is paramount.
